A Ryokan is a traditional accommodation with historic charm and ambience. A ryokan is known for their public or private bath facilities (called onsen) which uses hot spring water from the area. Some modern ryokans in current times use normal tap water, but the idea of being a place for relaxation and wellness is still the same. Ryokans exist as luxury accommodation, but also as midrange and upmarket versions. A luxury hotel could either be a typical modern chain city hotel or something more boutique with traditional Japanese elements and decor. They are accustomed to managing the stays of discerning guests with high expectations.
We offer private experiences in the main cities such as Samurai experience, Tea Ceremony, Visit of a Sumo stable, Dinners with Geisha or Maiko, and Local Food Tours. We also offer overnights in a temple, a spiritual walk with a monk or hikes through local villages. One of the new experiences we offer is an overnight stay in a farmhouse in Chino, a peaceful escape into Japan’s rural heartland.
In terms of accommodation, activities and overall service yes! One consideration is that Japan is known for being less flexible. When it comes to last minute schedule changes, additional guest requests and wishes out of the normal, there can be challenges compared to other destinations. The Japanese strive for high quality delivery and prepare everything in advance and with strong attention to detail. The Japanese fear that the same accuracy and quality cannot be delivered with last minute changes that younger children often require.
